Clone Tool

Defining Clone Area:

After selecting you Clone Stamp tool, use must press down on the OPTION key to select the area you wish to copy from. Once the area has been selected you can then copy, or "clone", that part of the image onto another part.

Brush Sizes:

Brush size is important when it comes to defining the clone area and application. If you brush size is very large then the area being pasted down will be large as well, which if you are working on a smaller surface would make it difficult.

Forward Warp Tool:

Smudges the image.  

Reconstruction Tool:

Restores image to it's previous state.

 Pucker Tool:

Drags the image into the spot clicked, like being sucked into a black hole.

Bloat Tool:

 Expands the area from point clicked, like filling it with water.

GIF Colors and Quality

Number of Colors: 6

File Size: 7,891 bytes

Number of Colors: 200

File Size: 27,357 bytes

Both of these images have smaller file sizes compared to their .jpg versions because they are both in Indexed color mode instead of RGB. Since it's in indexed color mode, the amount of colors are restricted to 256 or less colors, in the examples above it is specifically 6 colors and 200 colors.

JPG compression VS File Size

Quality: 100

File Size: 55,948 bytes

A .jpg with 100 quality has a large file size because it does it's best to preserve as much of the colors it can. There are no .jpg artifacts.

 Quality: 60

File Size: 19,467 bytes

A .jpg quality 60 is of "average" size. It doesn't work as hard to preserve colors and sharpness of line. There are some .jpg artifacts.

Quality: 0

File Size: 5,865 bytes

A .jpg quality 0 has been so compressed, that it does not try to preserve line or colors. The picture is fuzzy and has plenty of .jpg artifacts.

Layers and Compositing

Reel in the Sky

The first thing  did was change all the "background" layers into actual usable layers on each image. After that I went through and selected the negative space of all the images using the magic wand tool. With the sheep I used a combination of magic wand and the quick select brush. Once all the negative space had been selected I deleted it.

I created a new document like required and pasted the reel onto the file. I added the light bulb, sheep, and telephone as those were required. I then added the pyramids and arranged the element in a way that I had liked. I then added the fish and the thumb tacks because I wanted them to be fighting. Lastly I added the image of a sun flower behind the film reel to make it look more like a sun. This was for the pun: "the reel in the sky keeps on turnin'"

As each element was added they were placed onto a new layer. I had to figure out what I wanted on top of or below each element. The sunflower was on the bottom-most layer, the reel light bulb, sheep, and pyramids placed on the layers above it. The thumb tacks are on the top most layer, the fish and the phone being placed below it but above the pyramid's layer.

Rectangular Marquee tool:

Selects rectangular sections.

 

Elliptical Marquee tool:

Selects elliptical sections.

 

Lasso tool:

 Free hand selection

 

Magnetic Lasso tool:

 Based off of contrast, selects object that are free handed but a bit more restricted.

 

Polygonal Lasso tool:

 A lasso tool that keeps everything done in straight lines and angles.

Magic Wand tool:

Selects objects similar in color depending on the amount of tolerance it has. The more tolerance, more similar colors will be selected. The less, the closer to the original color it will stay.

What Pumpkin Logo

I have chosen the logo from What Pumpkin Studio. What Pumpkin Studios makes merchandise for their works. Their works they have merchandise for include; Problem Sleuth, Homestuck, and Paradox Space, all of which are webcomics. They are also producing a game called Hiveswap. In terms of color, their logo is very simplistic. There are at most 3 colors used, a light grey, mid-grey, and dark grey. It is in the shape of a pumpkin and has a question mark "carved" into it.

Identify specific symbols

The specific symbols within the logo are a pumpkin and a question mark.

Identify Origin of symbols

The term "What Pumpkin" comes from the webcomic JailBreak, one of their other works. In it the reader "commands" the main character to interact with the pumpkin to which the character responds with: "What pumpkin?"

Discuss meaning

This sort of reference to pumpkins became an inside joke throughout the different webcomic series. These characters generally always respond with "What Pumpkin?" as there is something "wrong" about the pumpkin. In some cases it's because it's carved, sometimes because it simply disappears before the character can see it, or in other cases because it's stuffed with items. 

Identify Semiotic Category

The semiotic category could be symbolic, as those who purchase or use any of What Pumpkin's items recognize it as their symbol. It can be considered iconic as it does represent a pumpkin with a question mark carved into it.

Define Semiotics:

Semiotics is the science and study of signs.

Define the three categories of Semiotics:

• Iconic:

Iconic looks like it represents. Iconic images can be like pictures of a campfire for a place to have campfires and mountains for mountain range.

• Indexical:

 Indexical images are images that have a causal effect. Meaning that one thing causes another. An indexical image can be of smoke and ash after a fire has burned out, the fire caused smoke and ash to be.

• Symbolic:

Symbolic icons are a learned symbol. A symbolic icon can be the the symbol for up (an upwards facing arrow/triangle).

Terms of symbol:

The symbol is the handicap sign from the bathroom.

Type of symbol:

This icon is partially iconic as well as symbolic.

Meaning of symbol:

It can be seen as iconic as some disabled people are restricted to their wheelchair, however not all people with disabilities are wheelchair bound. That is what makes it partially symbolic. We see this image and have learned that this means "handicapped accessible".
