Semiotics is the science and study of signs.
Define the three categories of Semiotics:
Iconic looks like it represents. Iconic images can be like pictures of a campfire for a place to have campfires and mountains for mountain range.
Indexical images are images that have a causal effect. Meaning that one thing causes another. An indexical image can be of smoke and ash after a fire has burned out, the fire caused smoke and ash to be.
Symbolic icons are a learned symbol. A symbolic icon can be the the symbol for up (an upwards facing arrow/triangle).

The symbol is the handicap sign from the bathroom.
Type of symbol:
This icon is partially iconic as well as symbolic.
Meaning of symbol:
It can be seen as iconic as some disabled people are restricted to their wheelchair, however not all people with disabilities are wheelchair bound. That is what makes it partially symbolic. We see this image and have learned that this means "handicapped accessible".
